Am I the only player using green and yellow for unit bases?

Post by the_iron_duke »

I've only ever seen the default red used for the opposing army's BG unit bases in FoG screenshots. I find the red too overpowering and feel that it detracts from the painted miniatures. I prefer the more natural-looking green/yellow combo. Anyone else use green/yellow? Just interested!

Also, I've seen some people use circles rather arrows for the bases which I would find make it harder to see at a glance a BG's facing. Each to their own preferences, I guess!

I use blue and yellow. Seems to be the easiest to see for me. I also modified my arrows. Didn't like the circles/arrow combo.

How did you get arrows without circles? I didn't think FoG was moddable. The contrast between blue and yellow makes things clear and looks nice but blue's not as neutral a colour as green for my personal taste!

Look for base0.png in \Field of Glory\Images\MapNonRotating\

I play without circles at all, but I have to say that Brigz modification looks neat.

 How on earth do you know who's who without any identification...?

I used Inkscape to mod the images. You can find the images where Rodia said. I usually use Paint Shop Pro, but for some reason the mask trait on the images only were modible with Inkscape. I just erased the circle and copy and pasted the arrow so that there would be a front and rear arrow. If you try to mod anything, be sure and make a back-up of the original files! I usually make a sub-folder called "Orig" to store the original images. And of course your new modified images must have the same name as the originals. I also rename the originals with an "x" at the end of the name just to make them more identifiable.
BTW - Inkscape is a free download. Just do a search to find out where the site is.

Good ingenuity, Brigz. The results are functional but also allow a better view of the painted miniatures.

Right now I mostly play hoplite scenarios so it's easy to know who's who, and battles are made usually of one easy line.

I thought the same about red and green circles so I moded base0.png to delete the circle - until I realized there was an option ingame for that. :D

But I may need Brigz bright idea for multiplayer, those armies look sexy. Wish the arrows could turn with the units though.

EDIT: Heh, that last thing can be easily done editing base1.png to base6.png and selecting "arrows" in preferences.

I suppose I could attach the files to a message. Do you guys want that?
I've never done it before but I can try.

See if this works. I've put the six facing images in a zip file. Try them out if you wish. Be sure and save your originals with some kind of identifiable name just in case. Be sure and put these in the images/mapnonrotating folder, NOT in the "arrows" folder

I think I'll try them out as well - in green and yellow, of course...

Nice job! I like the idea that the terrain shows through better. Make the entire look more natural.
