Breaking off question

Mounted will break off from close combat in the JAP if at least half their opponents are steady foot. Fair enough, but . . . .

How is this calculated? By BGS? By number of bases in contact? By number of bases fighting? Perhaps I simply missed the appropriate line in the rule book. Here is the situation that arose in one of our games at Historicon this past weekend. My BG of lancers charged a BG of MF and a BG of LH. My lancers were 2 wide x 2 deep and so had one base in contact with each enemy BG, also two bases fighting in melee against each enemy BG. The enemy MF BG was 3 bases wide x 2 deep, and the LH were 2 x 2.

If the MF had remained steady (in the event, they did not) would my lancers had broken off?

 Otherwise, mounted troops break off if at least half their close combat opponents are STEADY foot. (Counting only front rank bases in contact other than only as an overlap).

So yes (if I understand your example correctly).

Only front rank bases count. I see. Thank you for pointing it out; not sure how I missed that.
