Autosave

How does the autosave work exactly? In the manual it is said the game is saved every turn. There is no "autosave" file, so far what I have seen is that it save everyturn on the save file I have loaded at the start of a game. Is it correct?

True
In other words it is corrupting the orrigional save - I can nolonger go back to it.
