DLC 39-40 Grand Campaign

Post by nikivdd »

The new content packs are finally available ! And the NDA is lifted :)

Here are the thoughts i would like to share to all of you who have been in great anticipation of the new content. I'll keep it short ;).

Together with other players i had the luck and fortune to be one of the testers of the beta versions.
I must say my jaw was knocked open when i started to play. All those scenario's gave an entire new insight of the strength of scenario designing in Panzer Corps.
There are so many different mission objectives, different sorts of maps that kept me going at the tip of my chair. The let's-play-one-more turn feeling i had with another great game, has returned in full force (althou not everyone at home was happy about that lol). I cannot forget to mention the easter eggs, or in other words the units you can capture! The replayability factor is high! Also the possibility to carry over your core units from the DLC 39 to DLC 40 is definately a plus. The designers displayed an endless pool of ideas to make the game more fun and entertaining for everybody. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or a pro, the packs are playable and accessible to every "armchair general".
What i considered important and gratifying as well is that the developer's were welcoming our input and feedback and incorporated some of those betatester ideas/suggestions in what would become the "release" version which everyone can purchase now for a mere pittance!
So purchase them today :).

Thank you!

Just because I am lazy, I'll copy/paste what I wrote previously on the beta boards :

"The vanilla campaign was an outstanding remake of an outstanding game. But the DLC really push the boundaries of the game : combining the branching campaign structure, "storytelling" aspects (with briefings that are directly relevant to the actual tactical map), innovative map design, diverse objectives, scripted/dynamic events, and elements of foreshadowing from one map to another (eg. scouting Piatek, Modlin or Warsaw during the previous scenarios), you manage to achieve a degree of IMMERSION that I didn't imagine was possible with the relatively "light" PG game mechanics."

Hope everyone will enjoy this as much as I did.

I also really liked the 39/40 DLC in Beta and it makes Panzer Corps even better. I especially liked the 1940 DLC.

Ideally you take a look in the DLC forum and see my 1939/1940 campaign reports.

I almost got my butt kicked in Belgium already. I really wonder how I will survive 1942-43.
Lost core units, something that barely happened before the USA in the original campaign.

We already have 1939 and 1940, let's see what is going to happen in 41/42/43...! :)

I'll add my thoughts from the beta test... here is a summary I posted after my first play-through of both campaigns.

Overall, I think this is an excellent direction for the PzC franchise. The use of side "quests" and surprises such as captured enemy units is great. The scope of the scenarios is more intimate, and made me feel more attached to my units. These campaigns made PzC feel not just like a strategy game, but to a lesser extent an RPG experience as well (and since I enjoy RPGs, I think this is a good thing). Prior to the release of the DLC betas, I found myself mostly drawn to the multiplayer side of PzC -- the single-player campaign was nice, but seemed to be over too quickly. With the arrival of the DLCs, I am more eager now to try my hand on the SP content; to experience taking my units through both years (and later years, once they are available). In other words, the DLCs have rekindled my interest in PzC as a whole, and not just a MP vehicle.

The AI is much improved; in general, the AI plays a more spirited, smarter game. There were very few times when the AI felt like a pushover; in fact, in some scenarios (Albert Canal comes to mind) it played on par with a competent human player. Again, this reinforces my desire to get back into the SP aspect of the game, because now I feel there will be a genuine challenge offered.

I think both the '39 and '40 campaigns are excellent and reflect a new level for PzC. Thanks for bringing new content to PzC so quickly; it has been a pleasant surprise. :)

I've now played until Norway.
I have to say, I totally love the fact that there's now almost never DV==MV, only faster.
You usually have time until the last turn, just more stuff to do - that perfectly fits my playstyle, and I had generally a relatively easy time in most missions. Challenging, but not bang-head-on-keyboard hard.

That said, the mission in which you skirmish with the russians is designed by a sadist. A fair opposition in tanks was determined, then doubled, doubled again and that number was doubled once more.
At least that's what it feels like. A little toning down would be in order.

Also, playing the core campaign once again underlined the Cavalry issue - there's loads of enemy cavalry in the 39 DLC. What is it that makes these units tank killers/killers in general?
They have only 2 INI and only 1 HA - why do they frequently kill 6 tanks in one attack?

I'll write more when I have finished the campaign.

Once more wanted to weigh in.

Praise is in order. I played PG extensively (more than most people play all video games in a lifetime, perhaps lol) and I LOVED it.

Panzer Corps was a little frustrating at first because I suspect it is more difficult in some ways... the projected losses are more random than in PG (it seems, at least) and (most importantly) the AI is FAR more challenging in the sense that it makes better choices for it's units consistently and sometimes with lethal efficacy. NICE.

Now that I've got a feel for the game, however, this difficulty spike is a welcome aspect to a fantastic game. The way you guys have chosen to structure the DLC content is bloody brilliant; I can't wait to spend another $5 on 41', and then 42' and so on. DLC as a phenomenon is something I have mixed feelings about because often the value received is debatable; in the case of PC DLC I am more than satisfied and I believe $5 is a generous price for what we as customers receive. I'm pretty anti-greed so from me this is HIGH PRAISE indeed. You guys (the devs) are awesome; thanks for putting so much quality work into this game. It is nice to buy something and really feel that you get your money's worth... a rare thing these days for many of us, I think.

Challenging, rewarding, interesting enough intellectually to keep me focused for many hours on end, and not a rip off. This game is a MASTERPIECE. Thank you, Slitherine. You guys have my business for as long as you continue to produce such excellence.

Well, back to Poland for another stab at building the baddest corp I can to bring into France!

why do cavalerie kills 6 tanks in one attack. 2 reasons one sounds like the tank is in close terrain. And early tanks arent that good.

The best AT Gun in WW2 was the Polish version
Calvary units were equipped with them.
Also, Calvary is infantry that dismount.
So think of them as fast moving infantry with good weapons.
Do you really think they did Calvary charges?

I've been lurking for a bit, and was happy to find Panzer Corps, since it was becoming difficult getting PG to run on ever more advanced PCs and Operating Systems. Amazing how I still play this game regularly, where 90% of my huge budget "blockbuster" hit games sit on the shelf collecting dust.

Kudos once again.

Those two were rally easy. Only Modlin, Spoils of War and that level when you had to capture and escort Franch general to get a DV were hard. Allied airforce was easy to eliminate, and then my bombers could do their job.
