If I remember correctly (I could be confusing some issues with the FoG miniature edition), the Numidians have elephants, medium foot and some imitation legionaires available. So while its not a stellar army, its not as bad as you put it.
Someone mentioned the Pergamene - again, nothing stellar, but their heavy cavalry makes up for their more-than-average infantry. I'm still a bit suprised they did not get "average" heavy foot spearmen...

In my opinion the Illyrian army is exceptionally bad (as it seems was in history). Light unprotected horsemen, light unprotected javelinmen, light unprotected slingers... the only melee unit are medium protected offensive spearmen... all average. Try fielding taht against Macedon, or better yet Romans - a half-blind rufous lemur could win as thee Romans against them.

"Eternal Empire" is the final qualifying section for NAFF 2011 and it will be started later in the week. So far I have these armies as candidates . . .

Albanian (the middle army)
Byzantine Morea
Byzantine Epiros
Later Bulgarian

Are there any more? Closing date for suggestions - 9pm UK time Wednesday evening, 19th October.

I'd like to nominate the Moldavians..they might have Superior Cav but there's not enough off it to offset the fact that the core of the army is average medium foot bows.Also the Cavalry is bow* for the most part.

Thanks for the suggestion but I think the Moldavians (with their various allies) are a much stronger army than the four that I have in the list so far.

The Numidians do have Nellies.....A grand total of two of them, plus 12 Imitation Legions. Getting those, plus whatever MF and Gauls you can, you're still left with some 245 pts (in a 500-game). Meaning that nearly 50% of your army will be light troops.

The Illyrians won't win any prize-fights either, but at least they can bring some Syracusan allies with them, getting some HF Impact Inf, and Hoplites to help out.
The Numidians can't bring anyone to the party, the poor buggers.

I've played with the Numidians once, and.......Well, never again, thank you very much.
