Yes by solving the flanking issue, I've limited the Persian tactical options - but I'll perserve the scenario anyway for the sake of interestpetergarnett wrote:Marathon for me will always be one of the most boring battles to refight - tried it in several versions of boardgames & I'm afraid I cannot find anything positive abut it.

Akragas seems to evenly balanced on the few games I've played it, Crocus plains however ain't! But then the Phokians did raid the Treasury of the Delphi temple, so I guess that's karma. But remember the beauty of paired matches is how you do overall, so sometimes it is rewarding to play as the unperpowered side. It's just at Marathon the Greeks (and to a lesser degree the Persians) don't have a lot of choices.Archie wrote:Marathon 490BC not really a multiplayer scenaro... OK against the AI as a puzzler...
The next one will be Akragas 406BC... think that will be more challenging...
Have concerns about Crocus Plains 353BC as the Macedonians are too strong in my opinion..so would like to give that a miss...
Would welcome others opinions.... concerning the next two scenaros....

I run off a version of Marathon, perhaps you would like to give it a test... then we can test yours at the same time... (Both paired games)

Have had a go at re-designing this battle. Solved the width issue, but created a depth issue for the Persians - will have to double the height of the map! Sigh have to start from scratch. At least I have the OOB already done.

Morbio (Athens) 9/9 vs 5/22 IanDavidSmith (Persia)
Morbio (Persia) 0/22 vs 12/9 IanDavidSmith (Athens)
I'd like to say this was exciting.... but I can't. Unfortunately this is one of the most unrealistic scenarios compared to history that I've seen. How Athens could win this if the real battle was as the game was setup is beyond me. It would need the Persians to charge the hoplites using their bows as clubs for Athens to win
I wonder if the real battlefield was more constrained? Or if the hoplites were wider than usual rather than deep so they could stop any flanking moves by Persians?
Thanks for the game Ian, I look forward to a more challenging game (for both of us) in the future.

Hi all,
I've had a go at improving the scenario by adjusting the morale and armour of some of the units. If anyone wants to try it the files can be found here:

That's my understanding from reading various sources. However I think the constrained frontage will limit the tactical choices so much to just turn the battle into a rugby scrum.Morbio wrote:<snip>
