Multiplayer challenges with blank army names

Post by massina_nz »

I've just got back into FOG.

I always post mulitplayer challenges, as there's never really any available, not that that puts me off.

Just for a change, in my last batch of challenges I didn't reveal the Army I was challenging with. In the past I always displayed the Army name in my challenge.

I'm wondering if it is more common to display the army name or not. Any observations from those who have accepted challenges?

I suspect only experienced players are willing to accept a challenge of an undisclosed opponent army.

I prefer to know which army I am going to be fighting so I can choose an appropriate historical opponent. If I choose a Castilian army I want to be fighting the Aragonese or the French or the English, not the Swedish or the Irish.

Good point.

I'm not sure if other opponents pick armies for more competitive reasons. Especially if you prefer predominately cavalry based armies.

Its hard to say which ones are more common(only Slitherine knows:0)..... I myslef have no problem accepting hidden challenges and i often post both ways as well.

I guess expections/disapointments might happen if you post the army unhidden and your opponent takes an army that isnt a good line (either way) or you have just played vs that army 7 times prior ...
Of course the same thing can happen with hidden ones so its all good.

I think a player posted a long time ago how annoyed he was when everytime he posted an open challenge W Persians his opponents would always bring Spartans;)

I suppose the risk of an unwanted or uneven match-up is on both parties in a blank challnge, but only for the challenger in a named challenge. Would have been nice to allow for a small comment in challenges to note any preference as to the opposition, but I think that's been suggested before.

Well, heres the thing, the above example i gave annoyed the player in question as whenever he wanted to play with Persians, people always chose Spartans as that is the "classic" lineup , nothing to do w competiveness at all really.

Also, when you have hidden challenges very often you will get a nice civil war battle which is good once in a while but which you almost never get when naming the army ( i never purposfully go for civil war battles but always have a good time when they happen)

I guess everything in moderation

I think I might just iterate between named and un-named challenges over the next few weeks and see how it goes. BTW all my current (un-named) games have worthwhile match-ups.

FWIW, I seldom accept blind challenges unless I know the person who issued them and I never personally issue blind challenges. I'm looking for match ups that make for a good game more than a competitive game. So I won't pick a shooty army if some challenges with, say, a Mid Republican Roman army. Rahter I would choose Punics or Guals.

I know I would always prefer something historically appropriate, so knowing the opponent's army name would help me to chose what I fight with.
