Noob Question about Starter Armies

Post by ParaPete »

I am using the Legions Triumphant: Imperial Rome at War book. I have only ever played FOG once at Origins last year and enjoyed the game immensely. I am trying to create my first army based upon one of the "starter" armies.

I am going to be making a Principate Roman army. The place I get stuck is under Legionaries. It says 4 BGs. Then in the next column it says Each comprising 4 bases of legionaries: Superior, Armoured, Drilled Heavy Foot - Impact Foot, Skilled Swordsman.

Should I assume that I will have 16 individual bases of Legionaires from the above statement? Also, if this is the case, should I make my units easily distinguishable as to which Battle Group they are in? i.e., does it have some effect upon the rules?

thanks!

How the units look has no effect on the game. It's nice to have a command figure or standard with each BG, but it is not necessary. You just need to be able to tell the BGs apart for movement and combat!

Romans usually run in 4paks. The starter army is a good place to begin. Once you have the hang of the game you can start to increase the BGs in your army, depending on your own tastes and needs.

There are lots of replays in the AAR section. Check those out.

So then you DO indeed need to know?

O.o

FYI, since I am poor I have been making counters with 8.5x11 label paper and photoshop using some of the figures on Junior General. I probably should have NOT been lazy and given them unique units and battle flags but oh well. I created my dad's roman army already. I will be more diligent when I create my own army.

After a while it becomes easier to quickly work our where one BG starts and another ends as you get used to the concept.

If it helps you could try painting the edge of your counters with a different colour for each BG; I'm currently doing that for an army of mine where all the BGs are indistinguishable as they are all the same troop type!!

Ooh, and the vary from 8 bases to 10 bases.

If I have a single long battle line of the same troop type far from the enemy that shifts a base left or right I just pick up the bases from one end and move them to the other. The BG sizes are normally all the same, if not they are a different type of unit and I have to move all the bases along.

Yes, you will need 16 bases of legionaries. You have 4 BGs, each of those 4 will consist of 4 bases. That is 4 lots of 4 bases.

Battlegroups in the game do not split down into smaller groups, so it is not absolutely necessary to be able to trace a base back to its BG. Usually you can tell which base is in which BG because they are grouped together. On the other hand it may be helpful to have them distinguishable so when several BGs are touching each other you can tell where one ends and the next one starts. This can become more important if in future you have some BGs of 6 and others of 4 because then you can't just count along the line in 4s.

e.g.

XXXX
XXXX you know the four on the left are one BG and the four on the right are the other BG

XXXXX
XXXXX if you forget how you deployed, you don't know if it is a BG of 4 on the left and 6 on the right or vice versa.

What you could do is have one command base per BG (for example with an officer, standard and musician and one normal legionary) and position these at the front right of each BG. Then you will know where each BG starts.

Or you could paint the shields differently in each BG, but this may then restrict you to ceratain BG sizes.

Nothing wrong with this - in fact it's a great way to try out new armies / ideas before you go to the expense of buying figures and painting them etc. I used to do the same myself.
