Total frustration

Post by Spechtmeise »

I have tried the Armoured Charge scenario in the French Campaign numerous times...and I lose every single time. I am about to give up on this game. What tactics do I need to employ in order to win this? Can anybody help?

Don´t give up! The show has just begun...

Let me tell you how I did it :

First, Force selection is VERY important. You know you are low on armor and they are strong on it, but you have the defensible positions from the begining. The 37mm AT and both AT rifle units are a MUST. Then go for Engineers (the BESt unit of the expansion to finish off those heavy french armor beasts..if they can get close enough, of course). Maybe throw in the Mg39 last to have some fire support against their infantry. Forget about anything else.

Positioning your troops is also important. Don´t worry about gaining even an inch of land until your Panzers have arrived. Dig in and see how the allies bleed themselves to death against your strong points. Leave one of the ATs in it´s middle starting position and cover it with one infantry unit in the forests next to it for protection against infantry. AT gun will become elite in no time, and it will be the nightmare of your enemy, believe me. The other AT should go to the Hill since more armor will come that way. Also some Engineers hiding there for a nasty surprise when armor gets too close is a good idea. Command Point is not into much trouble, but don´t forget to defend it as well. Look for flank shots with your AT rifle units, but they need to be very close (and from the rear side) and are not as effective as they look...Unlimited AT ammo and cheap price make them valuable.

After your Panzers arrive, is time to move on. Go for a flanking manouver both on top (sand) and bottom roads of the map, with scouts looking for hidden units in buildings and always using flanking shots from your armor. Re positioning your ATs in a smart way (always to confirmed safe spots of course) will help. You have a lot of infantry for suppressing fire.

Is hard, but is doable, and it´s a lot of fun, specially when you see that your tactics pay off and serve Victory to you on a silver dish.

Enjoy and good luck!

A couple of tips:
- Use "hold fire" a lot. This avoids your AT guns and infantry giving away their position during the AI turn - which draws British tanks like flies and leaves the unit dead or surpressed. Fire only when necessary and give priority to ambushing the tanks.
- Holding the 2 frontline VPs to get the SS reinforcements is useful. You may need to sacrifice a few units to hold the VPs, but you get 2 Waffen SS and a tank all with high experience levels. As soon as they arrive, evacuate the frontline and dig in around the central village.
- Focus on holding the central VP, picking off enemy units only when its safe or if you have no other choice.
- Once the 88mm guns arrive, try to deploy them asap, but remember you no longer need to hold the central VP. If the position not safe, deploy the guns further back. Always deploy them in houses, fortifications or at least forests. They should be able to blow up British tanks no problem, just avoid them being overrun & surpressed.
- Your tanks aren't good enough to take on enemy tanks in the open. Use them against infantry instead, or to pick off isolated depleted or surpressed tanks. Always keep them in covered positions.

Afraid you are talking about British Attack mission here (not Armored Charge), but those are some very nice tip for that mission in any case...and he will eventually get to it!

I guess that explains why you didn't mention the 88mm guns at all...
