MP/PBEM n00b questions

Post by CheerfullyInsane »

Okay, so I'm ready to wiggle my toes in the MP waters, murky as they may be.
Exactly how does one go about it?

When I log-on through FoG, there's a bunch of private challenges.
I'm assuming these are pre-planned games, parts of tourneys or likewise, and thus not for 'public consumption' as it were.
Or am I being dense here?

If the above is correct, do I simply throw out an open challenge and hope I don't get mangled by a tiger-shark in the process?
Do I look for opponents here, or is there are second forum out there that I'm unaware of?

And if an open challenge is the answer, what's the optimum choice for a game?
Historical scenarios, or DAGs?
And if DAGs, what's the preferred point-limit?

Finally, any chance of anyone out there playing the part of a mentor for a game or two?
Or another beginner for that matter.
I don't mind having my butt handed to me in a game, that's to be expected when learning a new system.
I would however, prefer to avoid the Greek version of Custer......
"Where did all these friggin' Persians come from?!?"

I suppose the whole post could be summed up as: HELP!
But that seemed a little flippant.

Hello, all the locked games you see are private challenges, either league, campaign games or just friendly challenges people have.
There is a foum area for campaigns and leagues, ya kinda of have to scrolls around to get a feel for when new rounds start etc.

Dont worry that the majority of games out there appear to be locked, that is because open challenges go very fast....
Because of this there really isnt a dedicated area to post challenges to people, the open games basically solves that problem.

I doudt there is an "optimal" choice for army size but if I had to guess, 500-600 ap's is most common, also its really your preference but methinks more people play the DAG battles as opposed to the canned scenarios....

I wouldnt worry about sharks looking to find a new player just to beat up on, I think people just want to play.

BTW I just pm'd you (check the inbox of the private messages)

Cheers!

I would definitely play variuos sizes of games, from 400 up to 800 or even 1000, as they play very differently. I personally can't stand playing the 400 pt games, 600 pts are OK, but my favorite are the 800 pointers, they are just the right size for me (others think they are ridiculously large and slow!).

Ah.
So the lack of open games doesn't indicate a lack of games, just that there's such an abundance of players that open challenges gets swooped up quickly.
Duly noted. Good news in its own perverse way. *g*
Thanks for the swift replies.
