How do you upgrade units?

I can't seem to upgrade old units when i build new upgrade buildings, like supply depots for example. If i build a unit without any supply buildings, and then build a supply building, it seems to be impossible to upgrade the unit to the new size. This means i have to build a supply complex in every single city that i want to be able to build units in, since i can't seem to build small units in one city and then send them to a city with a supply complex in order to upgrade them. Am i missing something here?

You aren't, because you can't. Read the LEgion2 forums for commentary on that.,

As much as that makes a lot of sense for realism I wish there was another way other than completely recycling old units. Granted some intelligent strategy can let a smaller force win (I had 16 size 1s vs 8 size 4s and I had 12 units left when it was all over one time) but the larger forces do give some nice benefits.
