The Lost World Campaign

Post by petergarnett »

I'm looking to start a campaign using some simple rules so that battles using FoG / DAG have a campaign context. However it's not an historical campaign, i.e. made up world.

Its open to anyone - you merely need to PM me with your choice of army.

Your country will begin with 7 areas each providing income for the raising of army points. If you lose an area you lose income & if you conquer an area you get it's future income. You are the head of the ruling house & look for your house to prosper by fair means or foul for generations. However the main point is to fight others using FoG PC and the DAG.

There are simple rules for taxing / collecting income, spending it on new armies, maintenance of existing armies, building cities etc. Also binding alliances (via marriage) and informal pacts which can be made / broken at will. Sieges will be resolved by abstract means which permit arrival of relief army & hence another battle.

Battles will often be against an opponent with a different size army.

There will also be random events such as bumper harvest, palace intrigue, death of an heir, etc. There will be various options for spending income including re-training your military (so you then use a different army list).

I'm not looking to play myself - I find running a campaign fun in itself. However you may see me pop up leading slave revolts / barbarian raids!

I would certainly be interested if still room.

Couple of ?'s though:
Are all armies available for picks?
Will allies be available , ie via the DAG army generator for that army?
Can more than one player have the same army?

Peter,

Thanks for organising this. I'd love to take part.

Will there be any graphical representation of countries? Will there be borders between countries? Or is it more abstract so that anyone can fight anyone, irrespective of the 'distance' between them?

I'll go in too if you can squeeze another bod in. Any army will do really...if you need some variety.

OK that's 10 so far - more are most welcome but that is certainly enough to make it worth doing.

The reason for asking for you to decide on an army is that some players are keen to know who they will be fighting.

So far we have one each for Gallic, Suren-Indo Parthian, Seleucid & Ptolemaic. If I could ask the other 6 to PM me their choice please.

No issue with selecting the same as someone else. As long as it's available in DAG for RoR.

It's abstract movement, i.e. anyone can attack / be attacked by anyone else. Explain that more shortly but it's simply because trying to share updated maps will slow things down too much. I'm aiming for players to play as fast / slow as they want to & not get held up waiting for me.

Players are currently:-

Amaz_Ed, deeter, TheGrayMouser, Scar, Blathergut, RyanDG, rbodleyscott, Morbio, ianiow & Xiccarph

Once I have the full list of armies we can begin.

The Lost World is based upon a scarce work by Homer - few have read it.

In it Homer describes the world as being shaped like a doughnut (hey it's not my fault you were thinking of the other Homer).

The centre of the doughnut is the inner sea and around the world is the outer sea. Each of you starts with a slice of the doughnut (which in turn is divided into 7 areas be they counties, states, tribes or satraphies). By crossing the sea you can invade any other country & so fight or assist any other player you choose. Crossing is pretty safe although not possible during the Winter season. Some random events, such as piracy, may alter this occasionally.

There are 4 seasons - Spring, Summer, Fall (too lazy to type Autumn) & Winter. You can campaign in all but winter. Each campaign season has a random number of turns (with a minimum per season) so you'll never quite know when a season ends. Each season starts with some decisions for you to make before the first turn.

Armies may be raised during any seasonal turn & are for the purpose of invading or defending. So if you raise an army to attack me I raise one in turn to defend against you. That I have also raised another to attack a 3rd player is irrelevent to our little war. To keep things simple you may only have one army in the field against the same opponent.

Armies cost money (1 coin = 1 army point) and you start with a treasury. Taxation is in the Fall season after harvest and each season you have to pay to maintain all your armies (1 coin per 2 army points). So be careful how much you spend as if you run out you'll not be able to defend yourself.

Late as usual but PM sent.
Hope there is still room :D
Battles will often be against an opponent with a different size army.
The attacker must do the challenge and the defender can see the size of his army and then choose how much he will use against it,right?
The defender might never have a bigger army if I understand things correctly.

hidde - yes that's pretty much it re the army size & battles. The software expects players to use armies of the same size but you can create a 1000 point army and only select say 750 points within the army.

Therefore I could declare war on you & offer a challenge of 1000 points but you may only have enough in your treasury to muster 750 points. However I'm sure that you would whoop me in the first battle so for the next one you are down to say 500 points and I'm left with say 400 points.

Interestingly you could also bluff - declare war on me with a 1000 points and only have 300 points in it in the hope I'll waste money raising 1000 points.

All of this depends upon players honesty when actually issuing & accepting challenges but I have no concerns there - everyone I've met is a gentlemen but hopefully is also enough of a rogue to make the diplomacy & bluffing interesting.

I also maintain the treasury records so can audit it all.

In order to keep the campaign running at a decent pace I would suggest that an area is conquered once the invader has won at least one battle and the defender concedes defeat, i.e. makes peace. That doesn't stop you defending for as long as you can field an army but does mean that if you're broke you cannot just ignore the inevitable, i.e. lose of an area (& it's income).

Just waiting for last 2 players to tell me their armies. I've give them a couple of hours as I've got to go shopping anyway.

Looking to begin this afternoon gents.

Not sure I understand this.

Player A declares war on player B with 1,000 points but player B only has 750 talents in the treasury. Therefore the battle is played out at 750 points? And player A has wasted 250 of his treasury for no benefit as he cannot use the extra troops? (He doesn't get a refund?)

Is player B (who has 750 talents in his treasury) allowed to defend with only 400 points, saving 350 against a future attack, or does the "code of honour" require him to go to the full limit of his treasury if the enemy attack is larger?
