I think the best fit in terms of period and location is Swords and Scimitars, but there's also an overlap with Decline and Fall.

I've played them also in DBR, and they had the same list than DBM :)
So....every book from 1000 AD to 1770 AD, I think....

I've used them against Vikings and won!!

So seriously, which themed competitions can they compete in?

I would not worry about which they can go in - any theme will welcome them as easy points under FoG.

Not so sure .

and why do people always want to use " tournament winner" armies . they should use their preferred army and the results might be astonishing :P

I agree with bahdahbum, we can't all win competitions some of us just make up the numbers so why can't we use an army that we like? I also enjoy themed club games which clearly means that neither my 15mm nor my 25mm Tuaregs will be able to come out and play if there's no clarification as to which themes they can be used in!

Valid Point. One for the FAQ methinks.

Andy, if you were playing in any 15mm themed tourney I was in and you wanted to use Tuaregs I would allow it.

A very funnt army those tuaregs . A few month ago ( october 2009 ), there was in France a themed tournament . But the theme was decided by dates . it was ton be medieval and I came with a champa army . 8 BG of elephants :P and some unprotected infantry . OK I could not win the tournament as I would have some loses , I had a hard time against english longbows ( and lost on a very narrow margin, the english being at 1 point of demo and it was to be the first who would loose one BG ... ), but it was very funny to watch all those magnificent KN trying to avoid the collision course with the elephants  .

Now , I know, we will never avoid "tournament winner armies" and competent players using them because " winning" comes before "having real fun" :(

For our IWC yearly tournament ( next year 5-6 february 2011 ), there will be , as it was this year, an open pool so everyone may take part with his favourite army . There is an historical pool ( antiquity before 106 BC ) , but at least everyone can take part in one or another pool :P

Sometimes people change when they are playing in a tounament, they play as if their lives depend on it, and choose armies to win. it is unfortunate but it is like this.

it all depends on why you go to a tounament is it to meet people and other oponents or to be in the hall of fame.

But there isn't an official answer. Tournament themes are up to those organising the tournament.

Phil,

Then they did not have to bother us with themed tournaments at the end of the army books

I do not even play tuaregs , but I know some people who do .The problem being, some organisators will always point out : no not that army it is not in the book because some people only work with what is written down . Not with logic .

Less than half the 'themed' tournaments I have played in have stuck to the themes in the books. Does that mean I have been playing illegal tournaments?

The themes in the books are suggested themes to make the life of tournament organisers easier.

I suspect that strictly Tuareg should not be allowed in any theme as they didn't actually fight any major actions against any of the other armies in the FoG books during the FoG period.

What I mean is : if you officially say that the tuaregs may compete in swords and scimitars and decline and fall, people will be able to use them and know to what book they "belong" .

Themed tournaments are what they are : what he organisator says but often they just stick to some books 8) sometimes , I agree it is just bay dates or with a very specific theme like : having an elefant BG in the army :P
