Drilled Medievals

Post by ravenflight »

Hi All,

Creating some drilled city state pavise spearmen. I'd like to get as much colour and flamboyance as possible, but don't want to go too over the top.

From other people's experience here are my three options - let me know which you think would look best on the battlefield:

(BG's will likely be 6 bases)

1 - the entire BG one City State
2 - each frontage one City State (so 3 cities per BG)
3 - each figure one City State (so 12 cities per BG)

I'm hedging towards 1 or 2, but 3 has it's own peculiar charm - that may be the hoplite in me.

I would go for one. I am doing hoplites and, besides some mixed mercenaries, I like the idea of personalizing battle groups per city (boitians, spartans, atheans, plateans, etc.)

Phil, you are a very naughty man and should be ashamed of yourself (or are you planning to switch to GLBT Skythians next year)?

Each figure representing its own guild. Plenty of online references for it if you look.

LGBT, maybe, but with hoplites there's always the attraction of the Punic conflict.

Sorry I meant to answer the actual question earlier. 1 Base the same per BG as a guild would, IMO, look right to scale as there was more than 1 person in a guild. But all different would look aesthetically better and could be used elsewhere.

Hi ,

a guild blason and banner for each two bases , fielding around 500men (2x250 men ) , seems a reasonable scale to represent a colourful BG of 6 bases of "Pavisiers" , not many blasons or you will lose the " eye candy " of the BG , what Army do you want to field ? Florentine, venetian , milanese or Neapolitan one?

Best Regards

I am quite fond of one "command stand" per BG in FoG. I think a 6 element BG with 3 banners would look overly busy. So I would paint all 6 as one guild with a banner. This makes it easy to identify the BG and IMO looks good on the table even if slightly "out of scale."

Jester, you've got me thinking (and that's seriously dangerous).

I've seen pictures of pavise having both a large city crest covering the entire pavise, and other examples where they are only in the top right hand corner.

Perhaps I could do one pavise with the full on crest and the other three being only small ones in the corner with the majority of the pavise being brown. This would allow the standards (one per frontage) to stand out more and not over do the eye candy as said elsewhere.

So in essence, for a 6 base BG I'd have 3 different standards, 3 pavise with corresponding full crest and the rest of the pavises being mostly brown with only a very small 'dot of colour' representing the crest of the guild!

Hmm.

Have to think about this more.

Incidentally, I'm doing Hungarians, and have found a brilliant source of modern crests. Whilst they have likely changed over the years, at least I should be able to find out what they were by contacting the city themselves if need be.

Ahh, the wonders of the internet.

Hi ,

if you 're doing an Hungarian Army , why not using some hussite blasons , some of them where prized mercenaries in Hungarian Armies ( OK depends of the period you will do :wink: but if you prepare a Matthias Corvinus Army could be an interesting choice to have historicaly good heavy foot) ;

it's up to you to see
your idea to do different size of blasons is very good but before gluing the figures on the bases try at blank first ( sorry no sure if it's the right expression in English , I'm a frenchjester
i'm not sure that I send the good wording sometimes in my messages

Best Regards

No, I understand completely what you say.

But you know what they say about the French? They have these outlandish French accents. It's kinda like the scots. We know that they speak without an accent all the rest of the time, and put on these accents whenever anyone (particularly a beautiful buxom blonde Swede) walks by.

Thanks for your advise Jester. I'll certainly consider the 'hussite' option. I was definitely going to put more 'sun and moon' banners in than not which are associated with the Szecklers, but I also believe associated with the Hussites.

I'll post my options once I start in full swing (in about 15 or 20 years)
