I am having very difficult Problems with 2nd ascension to venus. And it seems IMPOSSIBLE to complete! iv'e tried to destroy the dead horde using every strategy in the EF'ING BOOK!!! im actually getting frustrated
Ok, i did everything you said i should do, but it didn't improve or give any bonus... Infact, it actually decreased my kills and increased my casualties
So now im looking to you mr. Idea! ---------- Can'ya help me? PLEASE! Im going crazy!

make sure all your infanty have master swordsman l or better, it helps to have two strong heavy cavalry to take out those nasty archers. keep all your heavy infanty in the leadership ring of the general without getting the general killed of course.
I make it through Venus, and get stuck at Jupiter.
I must be doing something totally wrong, but I'll be damned if I know what, and it's frustrating me beyond words.
OK, I did this once before, with my usual army, and got to, hmm, the second Jupiter with fire trolls, or whatever they are.
Now, for me, the usual is ignoring Agility totally, and using lots of light troops. My usual skill training system I have spelled out here in these forums many times, so I won't repeat it here.
Anyhow, that didn't work. So I went back and started all over, with a firm plan for CoM.
I would use no Militia, no Light Cav, and focus on heavily-armored units. I would develop Agility, since that seemed likely to be the issue.
I have paid careful attention to developing Dodge and Parry; some units have both at Master level, along with Boots level 4 and 5. One of my Auxilia units has an Agility of 80, FFS, and two others have Agilities of 70 and 75. And you know how much it seems to help? Not one damn bit. The guys with the 80 Agility get chewed to scraps by Shadow Warriors in 15-20 seconds, no matter what formation they are in.
Of course all units have the best armor and weapons I can possibly afford, level 3 minimum, and mostly 4 or 5.
In spite of this, I am actually doing less well this time through than last time. I am stuck sooner in the progression, by 2-3 scenarios.
the easiest way to get thru mithras at the very hard level is to have a very stong, small army. 1 light infanty, 4 heavy infantry, three archers (celts) and two heavy cavalry. concentrate on swordsman, armor penetration, feign, and anti-infantry specialists for all infantry. buy an much up grades as you can for the infantry and be sure to upgrade drill early to get those higher equipent upgrades later. all infantry should have ajax banner and try to keep your infantry into one group when fighting. it took me some time to figure it out, but i just played thru the very hard level with:
there are lots of other options, but i always immediatly sell the scout and skimisher before starting and buy an auxilia light infantry to start the first battle. that light infantry is the one major key to winning and is as powerfull as your strongest heavy infantry at the end.
i've played thru mithras five times at the very hard level. actually, it is getting a little boring. what is your score? btw, reading skills do come in handy when attempting to master these trivial computer games.

Long time no see well, i finally got thru 2nd ascension to venus. You see, I suddenly realized i had made a BIG mistake... I hired soldiers to early, so instead, i started over, go figure... Here is a list of my army:
1 Leader (Which you probably allready figured out ) (lvl 66)
1 Militia (lvl 25)
1 Skirmishers (lvl 20)
1 Scouts (lvl 22) i think
6 Legionairs ( lvl 28, 27 26 25 26 23
2 Auxillary infantry (lvl 17 and 18 ) i think
3 Auxillary archers (lvl 17 18 and 19) i think
1 Preatorian (lvl 20)
1 Elephant (lvl 15)
1 Velites (lvl 17)
2 Noblemen (lvl 17 and 16) i think
And guess what?... I'm stuck on 5th ascension to Jupiter... omg... i cant win... ok... umm help

Yeah, sounds like we're both stopped at about the same point, eh?
There has to be more going on here than meets the eye. There has to be some little thing we're doing entirely wrong, but I'll be damned if I know what it is.
2nd ascension of venus just played out in a surprising way for me; and it illustrates how important cavalry are both in the historic sense of strategy, but also for beating the game's AI.
I started with my battle line shifted to the left half of the field, with my 3 aux anchoring my right flank on the scrubby ridgeline. I put my heavies, 4 legions and one principe, in the valley, with 3 heavy cavalry on our left flank. The line was positioned pretty far back out of range of their archers. My archers and velites were behind the front line.
As the first wave of ghost legions advanced, my cav moved forward and then swung around to attack the rear of the ghosts. By the time they got there, my legionaries had sauted their way through the ghosts pretty easily. So I swung my cavalry back to the left flank to get them out of the marching line of the second wave. And this is where it got interesting....
The two ghost legions and 1 archer on the ghosts' right flank took a shine to my cavalry and marched towards them. I was able to get one cav to charge the archers, while the other two charged then disengaged from the legions. Once the ghost legions engaged with the cavarly, they attempted to track them down all over the field. This allowed me to send my cavalry racing off to run down both archers units, and pull two ghost legions out of the assault as the marched to and fro in pursuit.
This is a good example of robindavies ideas on the "decoy" use of cavalry in the "2nd Macedonian" post. I suppose there is some historical accuracy to this on a larger campaign scale, though on a small battlefield it can seem a bit silly. Nonetheless, it is a weakness of the AI that one can try to take advantage of.
