U-Boat Strategy?

Post by OxfordGuy3 »

Hi - I think that I'm still feeling my way as to how best to use my U-Boats (as the Axis in GS, 1939 campaign), does anyone have any tips or recommended strategies? I've kind of gathered that its best to use them in groups of 3 or more, but am unsure where to place them to be most effective, and how many hits you should allow them to take before running to home for repairs. Also, what's a good number to have in play by, say, the end of 1940? Thanks!

It depends on the difficulty level, and on whether you're playing the AI or not. If playing against the AI , then I tend to keep them in the channel ports with the rest if the Navy and attack transports. This is especially good if you take England, and you don't have any enemy aircraft to worry about.

Against a human player (or vs the AI at higher difficulty), if they decide to really defend the convoys, you're U-Boats don't stand a chance.

I'm interested primarily in U-Boat tactics (and strategy) against the AI

If you play with Fog of War Off, then it's easy to avoid the destroyers, but with the Fog of War, it is a good idea to keep your U-Boats together. The AI doesn't seem to attack the subs with BB's and CV's, but the Destroyers can have awesome range and attack values. The AI also doesn't use many strategic bombers in an anti-sub role, preferring instead to send groups of DD's.

My preferred strat against the AI is to Invade England, then base Tac Bombers in Scotland. The AI often puts groups of ships around the Allied air bases in the North Sea, then you can combine the Air with the subs to sink some Destroyers, if my Subs attack the DD's at the same time, the AI doesn't seem to know what to do about it.

When this is done, your subs will have a few weeks to attack the Russian Convoys.

I also take the Suez canal and bring the Italians into the Atlantic.
