I was not refering to an overall drybrushing on the whole miniature, but concentrating on the chainmail. I do in two ways (I prefer the first one):

1) I paint the chainmail in black. Then I softly drybrush with chainmail to show the sculpture of the model.
2) I painthe the chainmail in chainmail colour. I use a black ink on it. Then I drybrush. This chainmail looks brighter this way.

After the process is completed, you can varnish it, preferably with matt varnish.

I normally paint all metallic colours after the matt varnish coat. That way I don't dull down the metallic shine.

You don't have trouble with the paint flaking off? I find acrylic are very delicate. One option would be to get a paint on gloss varnish and put that on last over the metallics.
