Testudo/Xyston compatability ?

Post by Three »

Can anyone help re Testudo figures, size-wise, since they are now available again.

I've got a good bit of a Gallic/Galatian Army done with Xyston - more than happy with the figures done, but looking for even more variety. The pictures I've seen of the Testudo figures seen to be well proportioned and "big" 15mm, but are they as big as Xyston ? Can they be mixed in one unit, and if not would they look out of place in their own units but used in conjunction with Xyston units ?

TIA

In the review I have read in madmaxeman I have found this

http://www.madaxeman.com/main/15mm_anci ... pliers.php

Testudo have been re-animated by Italians military painter Guiseppe Rava, and are selling figures online from their 2 ancients ranges, Gallic and Republican Roman. There are some pictures on the site of these generally very highly regarded sculpts, which are rather large compared to the "Essex standard". Probably a good matchh for the Roman & Gallic Xyston figures, or maybe some Warmodelling ones.

I am curious. Where would you buy Testudo miniatures? Is there any way to check how the miniatures look like? In the website where I have seen them, the official one from G. Rava, they seemed to me very expensive and with no guarantee as you can't see the pictures (I am mostly interested in Romans and Pompey).

I don't know if this helps, and I got it from the madaxeman site as well in the examples of Late Republic Romans:

http://www.fanaticus.org/DBA/armiesofth ... index.html

I don't see what more one can ask of a manufacturer at this time. These sculpts are remarkable.

Unfortunately, the photos do not help on establishing scale.

testudo are enormous - even dwarfing some of the Xyston Giants. Very good poses and so on. some bits are a bit skinny and the metal is rather soft.

Ouch! That verges on unuseable, at least with other manufacturers. Dammit.

Well a picture is worth a thousand words as they say.

The Testudo minis are works of art. I can see raiding Xyston for Spanish and such with a core army of Testudo. These lines really are closer to 1:72nd scale than 15mm or 18mm though.

Thanks Tim.

Thanks for all the replies, I had looked at Tim's site before posting the question, but missed the comparison photos, which, as noted above, really are worth a thousand words.

Do you buy Testudo miniatures in G. Rava website or you do it somehow different? I have read some problems with Rava website in the Internet. Any experiences?

Now that is what I call service!

A belated thank you btw...I had mentally resigned myself to having to pad out my old old old LIR army with dfifferent figures, almost certainly in larger scale than my TTG figures. Especiually annoying when you need one base to make up a legal BG! Until one day I happened to be browsing in your gallery and recognised one of my huns...

Thank you! The problem with the Internet is that you can read tons of things and you never know what is true.
