Maeglyr - Breton 411-579
defeats
Ironclad Germanic Foot Tribes 260-599 & Roman

61-40

We decided to bring as many cavalry as possible. And hold the large hill with our subfoot.
We expected large numbers of warbands, so : hit & run & flank !

The plan go as planned. Good. But one unit of wild, bold, savage, ruthless, freaky noble Germans lancers slipped through the net and do bad guy things. Subfoots weren't ready for this.
They rapidly scattered themselves (and two cavalry units by the way).

Fortunately, the rest of the manoeuvrers allowed us to restore the situation, isolating and flanking the warbands and put them down one by one. The freaky nobles were captured and they will not have a good time back at our camp.

Germans will surely sing epics songs about their great deeds, we won’t.

Solemnace Lombard 570CE-649CE defeats Rob123 Frankish 496- 599AD with Germanic Foot Tribes 43-7

Bringing mostly Infantry more expensive than the Lancers the Enemy can bring is always bad news for an infantry list. While the Germanic centre remained mostly intact and unharmed the German flanks quickly crumbled under Lance onslaught to give the Lombards the victory over the Germanic alliance. They were however able to catch out and kill a couple of Lombard Lancers on the left flank with careful cavalry use but it was not enough to prevent a general rout.

SgtOgre (Byzantine W/Lombard) defeated IronClad (Germanic Foot tribes w/Roman) 60-47

We had a grueling sluggfest as we maneuvered around a large , rough , hill. Fortunately for the Byzantines a few flanks opened up allowing some timely lancer charges that turned the tide.

Thanks for the game.

Division C

Solemnace Lombard 570CE-649CE defeats ulysisgrunt Roman 379-424 with Western Hunnic 49-21

The Lombard Lancers swept forward against Roman cavalry and infantry support by Hunnic Horse Archers. The flanks swiflty went poorly for the Romans but the situation on the Roman right was stabilised by the commitment of the Roman's cavalry reserve to support the right who routed off some of the Lombard left. The Roman left completely collapsed and the freed up Lombard Lancers swept around to engage both elements of the Roman right and reserve as well as the rear of the Roman infantry in the centre to break enough of the Roman army to force them to quit the field.

Division C

Solemnace Lombard 570CE-649CE defeats ggarynorman Roman 24BC to 196AD with Sarmatian 47-4

The Roman deployed in a long line making use of rough ground with their Sarmatian allies and Roman cavalry on the far right to face an even longer line of Lombard Lancers. While some fighting took place on a hill by a lake which resulted in the loss of some Roman Auxilia. The main fight took place on the Roman right where Lombard Lancers outflanked the Roman and Sarmatian cavalry to cave in their flank and wipe them out though the Sarmatians and Romans were able to break one of the Lombard Lancers in the process. The Lombards then turned their attention to the right wing of the Roman infantry now exposed and vulnerable with the loss of their Cavalry flanks and proceeded to mostly wipe them out as well forcing the surviving Romans to flee and hope that the Lancers didn't catch them as they withdrew.

Division B

SgtOgre Byzantine 551-578 W/Lombard and Chris Townsend Numidian or Moorish 55BC - 6AD with Roman met on a pretty open battlefield.

The Byzantine deployed their limited but good quality light cavalry on their far left, supported by some archers, their main cavalry to the left of centre, their infantry to the right of centre, and a mostly bow armed cavalry screen on their right. The Numidians/Romans deployed a large light cavalry force on their right, the Legions supported by elephants and one cavalry in the centre, and the irregulars supported by skirmishers on their left. The Byzantine left flank cavalry made short work of most of the Numidians light cavalry, while the irregulars and skirmishers handily won the Numidian left flank. The question became whether or not the Legions could defeat the Byzantine infantry (perhaps with a little help from the irregulars) before the Byzantine cavalry descended on the legions rear. In the end, the answer was yes, and the Numidian imitation legions have petitioned to become full Roman legions, with all the privleges of pay and citizenship.

Chris's Numidian defeated SgtOgre's Byzantines 54 to 24.

These forces were somewhat similar (except for camels versus elephants), with the Romans having access to better quality in both cavalry and heavy infantry. So the Numidians went for numbers, particularly in light troops, where half the maximum available was double what the Romans could deploy. In the end, the missiles did enough damage to win the flanks and, ultimately the battle, despite the heroics of the Praetorian Guard.

Division C

Solemnace Lombard 570CE-649CE defeats Indibil Hunnic (Sabir) 463-558 AD 51-21

A swirling cavalry fight fought among rolling hill. Hunnic horse archers were devestating at range but didn't always have the stomach to stand up and fight prefering to run away and seek opportunities to strike back. Sometimes this worked and Lombard Lancers out of position payed the price. Sometimes it didn't and Hunnic horse archers found themselves being run down and forced into a diffcult fight with their order disrupted. Even standing and fighting wasn't always an option. The numerous Lancers of the Lombards meant that there were often free Lancers to maneuver onto exposed Hunnic flanks. THe Huns own Lancers on their right flank held up better than some of their horse archers but the Hunnic centre and left were left in tatters and their stand meant little in the course of the battle.

Rockmanbob123 Avars has defeated Solemnance Lombards 45-19.

On the 24th turn the Avars using terrain to their advantage were able to channel and restrict the Lombard Heavy horse to small area within rough ground while their horse archers cause grievous casualties. Even after losing 45% the Lombard heavy lancers still had a chance to win when sunset ended the battle.

The Germans presented themselves on a mostly open field apart from a small wooded area to my left and right. There was also a body of water that would prove useful. A densely packed centre with cavalry on each wing I let my opponent come forward holding discipline. My key to victory was using the woods to block the cavalry to my left and cutting off the cavalry to my right and forcing them away from the centre trapped between water and woodland. This left allowed me to simultaneously push back in the centre and swing around into his left flank safe from the trapped cavalry. My plans do not often work out so well and my opponent then suffered a number of chain routs as the Roman machine cut into him from two directions. A relief to get my first victory this season after a chain of disasters.

Solemnace Lombard 570CE-649CE defeats wzfcns Roman 285-312 44-7

Late Roman infantry is very difficult for Lancer Cavalry to attack head on. The hill and the rough ground some of the Medium Roman infantry occupied made it an even stronger position. With a frontal attack not an option the Lombard sent their flanking units to sweep around the sides of the Roman army and the rough hill on the Lombard right to engage the Roman cavalry flanks. While the Roman left cavalry put up a fight the Roman right cavalry was swiftly overrun by the Lombards. Having out flanked the Romans the Lombards quickly maneuvered to set up the ideal attack on isolated Roman units which tried to respond to the attack. Several Lombard lancers were isolated and broken by the Romans in the process but by the end of the Day the Romans were the ones who had to abandon the field of battle.

Chris Townsend Numidian or Moorish 55BC - 6AD with Roman defeat Maeglyr Breton 411-579 AD 64 to 55

On a flat map with the occasional rough, the Bretons deployed almost maximum cavalry around a centre of Brythonic foot. The Numidians countered with their heavy infantry in the centre, their medium infantry with two elephants on their left wing (where there was some rough to the Breton side of the map), and a cloud of skirmishers and light cavalry. The infantry clash was won by the heavies, and, presaging the rest of the battle, one elephant fragmented quickly yo missile fire, while the other managed to engage and was still causing destruction in the centre at the end of the game. With the chaos of swirling cavalry and continuous missile barrages, I'm really not sure if there was any order or theme to the rest of the battle, but, in the end, the Numidians eked out a Pyrrhic victory.

Good game.
