Historial Accuracy Suggestions for Austria in the Late Campaign

Politics, religion, war. They are nothing without a legacy that can stand the test of time. Lead any nation, and turn it into a mighty kingdom in one of the most compelling grand strategy games ever created.

Historial Accuracy Suggestions for Austria in the Late Campaign

This is the current start of Austria in the Late Campaign. As an Austrian myself, I am of course very happy to have my native land in the game, but there are three issues with the starting situation I want to address.

1) Styria - Due to a treaty concluded in 1186 (Georgenberger Handfeste), the Duchy of Austria managed to inherit the Duchy of Styria when its last duke, Ottokar IV, died childless in 1192. At the Late Campaign start in 1223, Styria should be a part of Austria (see illustration), but isn't.

To bring the game in line with historical reality, I propose changing ownership of the provinces of Pitten and Laibach from the HRE and Carinthia respectively to Austria.

2) The Domains of Austria and Bohemia

This is the current state of the domains of Bohemia (light purple) and Austria (brown). Please excuse the colour similarity to Bavaria and Moravia, these are the colours assigned by the game. From a historical perspective, it's highly inaccurate. The Danube has never been the border river, the border between Austria and Bohemia (currently Czechia) is one of the most stable worldwide ever since those two polities emerged. Also, the name Doudleby is wrong. Doudleby is a village of 500 people near Budweis, about 100 kilometers away from the location of the settlement depicted in the game.

From a gameplay perspective, Domains are mostly between three and six provinces. Bohemia contains eight, which is highly powerful and unusual.

Therefore, I propose to a) change the name from Doudleby to Niederösterreich (province) and Melk (settlement), location of the famous medieval abbey - also roughly where the settlement graphic is and b) moving the province from the Bohemia to the Austria domain, Bohemia is reduced to seven and Austria increased to six, which is more balanced. This change would of course also be undertaken in the Grand Campaign and Mega Campaign starts.

3) This suggestion is optional: If the above move of Doudleby is undertaken, this leaves the domains of Austria and Bavaria with some very awkward shapes. The province of Linz could also be shifted from Bavaria to Austria, as this reflects historical distribution for most of the game period. This increases Austria to seven provinces, so a new domain called Carinthia, consisting of Villach, Friesach and Laibach could be split off of Austria.
