Round two result.

Stew101's advance on the imperial capital of Ravenna continues.

Stew's Lombard's followed in the steps of Hannibal centuries before them across the Alps, where their progress was blocked by an Ostrgothic force commanded by Heidiepie.

The two armies met in a mountainous river valley, with large rocky outcrops, dotted about the valley.
One of these outcroppings sat in the middle of the battlefield and blocked off most of one flank, for both armies.
The center and other flank, along the river, was more open.

A small hill, dotted with rough ground, jutted out from the first rocky outcrop into the center of the battlefield.
It was clear to both sides that this hill was going to dominate the battlefield and both sides set out to take it.

The Ostrogoths advanced on it with four units of bowmen, supported by spearmen.
Whilst the Lombards deployed lots of light infantry, supported by lancers and warbands.

The bowmen reached the hill first, but a couple were then disordered by light infantry bowmen and the Lombard light infantry javelinmen raced forwards to oppose the bowmen. In the next turn the javelinmen were joined in melee with the bowmen, by their lancers charging uphill, between the patches of rough.
In a catastrophe for the Goths, all four bow units were routed in one turn and Lombard warbands and lancers siezed the hill in strength.

With this base secured and an unexpected superiority in firepower, the Lombards now advanced on their right. They were opposed by a small force of superior nomadic cavalry and light infantry, but the numbers were now clearly with the Lombards on this flank. The Goths could not abandon their own lights and so eventually had to commit their left flank lancers to the fray. Although heavier armoured, they lacked the numbers and eventually succumbed to Lombard lancers finding their flanks.

The Gothic spearmen tried valiantly to turn the tide in the center and buy time for their other cavalry wing to arrive, but they made little impression on the Lombard warbands, who patiently stood and awaited the speamens attacks.

Result:
Win for Stew101s Lombards over Heidiepie's Ostrogoths.

yes disaster for the Ostrogoths, treachery is suspected among the archers who were in rough terrain but ran anyway !

IN A SEPARATE BATTLE, almost all mounted, the Vandals heidipie sent off the Lombards 41% losses to 62% losses

was a straight up bash on flat terrain, nothing pretty or dramatic , but the "armoured' Vandals eventually beat the Lombards with almost no armour.

was a close one, with the Lombards smashing the Vandals left flank, but again quality eventually won out

Armchairbaron's Byzantine army defeats Indibil's Gepid army by 61-43

The advance of Kronenblatt to the Imperial purple has met with a slight setback.

His Frankish army stumbled across the Gepids of Stew101 on the wide Dacian plain.

The huge Frankish warband looked certain to smash the much smaller force of Gepid foot; who wisely hung back, looked like an easy target and kept well out of reach.
Meanwhile the more numerous Gepid light infantry and lancers operated on both flanks, picking off the Frankish lights and cavalry.
The Gepids ruthlessly ran down their less numerous opponents, until the Frankish warband was stripped of its supports.
The Gepid lancers then turned there attention to the Frankish warband, which gallantly held them off for several turns.
Eventually though the Gepids were able to isolate the units on the ends of the Frankish line and drive lancers into unprotected flanks.

Result Stew101 Gepids defeats Kronenblatt Franks - score 10 : 43.
