scenario_descr = It was all that...and more!|Lt Colonel Kenneth McLeod commanded the 3rd Battalion, 6th USMC Regiment. They came ashore on November 22nd and moved in behind Major Willie Jones 1st Battalion.|During the night, Jones and his men fought off three fierce suicide attacks by charging and infiltrating Japanese, zealous to fulfill their commitments to Bushido.|At 0880 hours, November 23rd, McLeod's men took the forward positions that had been occupied by the weary 1/6 and began the advance down that deadly tail. The first 200 hundred yards (on Betio, advances were measured in yards, not miles!) were quiet - no sigh of the enemy. Then machine guns opened up on the lead platoon and the battle was on!|McLeod kept the enemy guns occupied and flanked them with other companies. The defenders all met violent deaths, either from the searing heat of a flamethrower or the shattering impact of a 75mm shell from one of the three Shermans supporting the advance.|By the  early afternoon, the first of McLeod's force had reached the very end of the island. The Japanese no longer had anyplace to hide, but only 17 out of an initial complement of 4,000 remained alive. Betio was declared secured. The cost had been frightful. Mistakes had been made in planning, logistics and communications. General Smith later commented on the harrowing experience for the Marines by saying "We were losing till we won." |The bitter lessons learned, however would serve the Marines well for the last 20 months of war in the Pacific and the even more horrific opposition that they would endure.
