// NAME
name = New Britain 1943-45

// DESCRIPTION
description = Operation Cartwheel will neutralise and bypass the Japanese base at Rabaul. Dominating the strategic Vitiaz Strait between New Britain and New Guinea is part of that plan. That in turn requires control of western New Britain.

event_0_0_title = Defeat
event_0_0_text = It is evident that not enough troops were devoted to this campaign, or existing forces were incompetently led, or both. A military court of inquiry will get to the bottom of this disaster and heads will roll, I assure you. The Cape Air Force's PBY will be flying you to CINCPAC. Take all your things because you won't be coming back.
event_1_0_title = Victory
event_1_0_text = The New Britain campaign is a success! It has played a major role in Operation Cartwheel, neutralizing and bypassing the major Japanese base at Rabaul. By isolating Rabaul, its large garrison are now prisoners of war without having to fight them. The land action is over but Allied air attacks will continue to pound Rabaul until August 1945.
event_2_0_title = Quadrant Decision
event_2_0_text = Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill meet at the Quadrant Conference in Quebec City in August 1943. There, the decision is made to bypass and isolate Rabaul rather than attempting to capture the base. However, this does not preclude invading New Britain itself.
event_3_0_title = Fortunately
event_3_0_text = The Japanese Eighth Area Army, under the command of General Hitoshi Imamura, comprises four divisions. In contrast, U.S. and Australian forces on New Britain are a division-level command or smaller. The Allies have underestimated enemy strength but fortunately the Japs are reluctant to reduce their defences in Rabaul to attack in force.
event_4_0_title = Ring Around Rabaul
event_4_0_text = The Allied 'Ring Around Rabaul' continues to tighten. The upcoming Operation Appease, an amphibious landing to capture the Talasea area of the Willaumez Peninsula, will be the last hurrah for the 1st Marine Division on New Britain. After this battle, they will be relieved by the U.S. Army's 40th Infantry Division under Major General Rapp Brush.
event_5_0_title = The Handover
event_5_0_text = For several months after the Battles of Talasea, Gavuvu, and Gasmata, there is little fighting between ground forces on New Britain. In October 1944, the Australian 5th Division takes over from U.S. troops and undertakes a landing at Jacquinot Bay the following month. The area is undefended and the landing is unopposed.
event_5_1_title = Montevideo Maru
event_5_1_text = As they disembark, soldiers of the 5th Division are recalling the Montevideo Maru, a Japanese auxiliary ship sunk back in July 1942 by the American submarine Sturgeon. There was no way for the Americans to know that over 1,000 Australian prisoners of war and civilians were onboard because the Japanese failed to mark it as a POW ship.
